Diagnosing and Treating Depression in Adults and Children

Depression is a common disorder among adults and children. However, the symptoms present differently in adults and children. This workshop will provide an educational overview of diagnosing, analyzing symptoms, developing treatment plans, and implementing appropriate treatment interventions. Also, we will explore the role of cultural competence in diagnosing depression.

Participants completing this program will be able to:

  1. Diagnose depression in adults and children.
  2. Interpret DSM 5 for accurate diagnosing.
  3. Analyze the difference in symptoms among adults and children.
  4. Implement Positive Psychology as an intervention.
  5. Implement Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as an intervention.
  6. Develop comprehensive treatment plans for treating depression in adults and children.

Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training

Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training gives staff the skills to recognize and respond to crisis situations that may involve more challenging behaviors. This workshop is designed to help mental health professionals provide the best possible care and welfare for assaultive, disruptive, or out-of-control persons even during the most violent moment. The training focuses on prevention, de-escalation, personal safety, and physical intervention.

Participants completing this program will be able to:

  1. Use the Crisis Development model to identify behaviors that indicate and escalation of behavior.
  2. Learn appropriate and effective staff approaches to crisis behavior.
  3. Assess how the behavior of one person impacts the behavior of others.
  4. Identify causes of behavior and how you may positively impact others.
  5. Recognize how communication skills are important for building, strengthening, and maintaining rapport with individuals in crisis.
  6. Practice awareness of position, posture, and proximity in the use of Supportive Stance.
  7. Identify different levels of defensive behavior in the Verbal Escalation Model.
  8. Examine and apply effective intervention for defensive behaviors.
  9. Examine environmental factors and approaches used to maintain safety.
  10. Determine how strikes can be managed or avoided.
  11. Practice applying disengagement skills for low, medium, and high-risk situations.
  12. Identify restrictive interventions and explore the legal and professional considerations when using restrictive interventions.
  13. Explore the Decision-Making Matrix when assessing risk behavior.
  14. Describe and demonstrate proper use of the principles of holding for individual presenting physical risk behaviors.
  15. Explore tension reduction and how to re-establish the relationship after a crisis event.
